FrameworksAndPlatformsOver the past few years web development frameworks have become more common. We have things like JSF, Ruby on Rails, Grails, OpenLazlo? and many more, positioning themselves to be the next big thing and make our lives as developers easier. As these thing have come along I have looked at them, used them (I am currently full time on a JSF project - or more specifically an Oracle ADF project) and generally found that they are as much of a hinderance as a help. People as old as me have used 4GLs and things like Delphi, DBase? and Clipper in the past and I am struck by the fact that the new web frameworks seem to be attempting to offer a simialar rapid database development environment that we had with those tools 15-20 years ago. Now I know the web has caused a siesmic shift since then and we need tools that are web based, globalised, etc., but my issue is that, if properly organised, developing web apps was never that hard. So why do we need a whole host of frameworks |
